Leg Press vs Hack Squat
Both machines take balance out of the picture. In the leg press you sit and push a platform; in the hack squat you stand and squat yourself.
| Leg Press | Hack Squat | |
|---|---|---|
| Muscles | quads, glutes | quads, glutes |
| Equipment | Machine | Machine |
| Entry bar | 1/3 fine from your first workout | 2/3 give the technique a couple of weeks |
| Pick it when | You're a beginner, your back complains in squats, or you want leg volume without extra fatigue. | You want more quads and a movement that feels like a squat. |
The main difference
The leg press is the easiest way in: your back is on the pad, the range is easy to limit, and big weights need little technique. Foot position shifts the emphasis: higher on the platform means more glutes and hamstrings, lower means more quads. The weak spot is the lower back at the bottom: if your hips lift off the pad, the range is too deep.
The hack squat is closer to a real squat: you stand, your torso is nearly upright, your knees travel well forward and the quads stretch more. The loads are noticeably lower than on the leg press — you can't compare kilos between machines.
Can you do both
Yes: the hack squat first while your legs are fresh, then the leg press for reps. Or alternate them between workouts if both don't fit in one.
