Barbell Squat vs Leg Press
Both load the quads and glutes. The squat is a free movement where your whole torso works; the leg press is a machine where you can give your legs a lot of weight with almost no load on your back.
| Barbell Squat | Leg Press | |
|---|---|---|
| Muscles | quads, glutes, adductors; back and abs hold the torso | quads, glutes |
| Equipment | Barbell | Machine |
| Entry bar | 3/3 technique decides — start light and film a set | 1/3 fine from your first workout |
| Pick it when | You want strength and a demanding lift, and you're ready to work on technique and film a set. | Your back is tired or sore, you're new or you want leg volume with little risk. |
The main difference
In the squat you carry the bar on your back and balance it yourself: legs, glutes, spinal erectors and abs all work, and the strength carries over to life and other lifts. In the leg press your back rests on a pad and the machine holds the path — you can work closer to failure without worrying about losing form. The weight on the sled is almost always higher than on the bar, and the two numbers can't be compared.
Can you do both
Yes. The classic is squats first and heavy, leg press second to add quad volume once your back is tired. If your lower back won't let you squat, the leg press and hack squat keep your legs working.
In which programs
Log both in the diary — your estimated max will show which one is growing faster for you.
