Hack Squat vs Barbell Squat
Both are squats, but the hack squat guides you on rails with your back supported, while the barbell makes you hold everything yourself. That's the whole difference.
| Hack Squat | Barbell Squat | |
|---|---|---|
| Muscles | quads, glutes | quads, glutes, adductors; back and abs hold the torso |
| Equipment | Machine | Barbell |
| Entry bar | 2/3 give the technique a couple of weeks | 3/3 technique decides — start light and film a set |
| Pick it when | You want quad work without loading your back, or you're learning to squat deep. | You want whole-body strength or you're preparing for powerlifting. |
The main difference
In the hack squat your back and shoulders rest on pads, the path is fixed, and you can place your feet higher or lower on the platform. Your torso doesn't have to balance, so almost all the work goes to the quads and glutes with minimal lower-back load. Taking a set close to failure is safe: if you can't stand up, drop the safeties.
The back squat loads everything at once: legs, back and the abs holding your torso. It's harder to learn but carries over better to general strength and doesn't depend on a particular gym's machine. For powerlifting results there's no substitute.
Can you do both
Yes, and it's a common pair: a heavy back squat first for 3–8 reps, then the hack squat for 8–15 when your back is tired but your quads can take more volume.
