The Smith machine bench press is a bench on rails: the bar can't drift, you barely need a spotter, but your stabilisers do less.

Setup
Position the bench so the bar comes down to your lower chest, not your neck. Pull your shoulder blades back and down, feet planted. Grip just wider than your shoulders, unhook the bar with a twist of the wrists and set the safeties just below chest height.
Execution
Slide a bench under the Smith bar so it sits over mid-chest, grip a bit wider than shoulders and unrack it.
Inhale and lower the bar to your mid-chest.
Exhale and press it back up until your arms are straight.
Common mistakes
The bench is in the wrong spot and the bar tracks to your neck or belly — check with an empty bar where it lands.
Elbows flared to 90 degrees — keep them at 45–70 degrees to your torso.
Bouncing the bar off your chest — touch and pause, no rebound.
Forgetting the safeties — set them before your first work set.
