Band-Assisted Pull-Up

The band-assisted pull-up is a pull-up where a band helps at the bottom: the same hang and path while you can't do many on your own.

Setup

Loop a band over the bar and pull it through itself. Put a knee or foot in the loop and grip slightly wider than your shoulders. Drop your shoulders and pull until your chin clears the bar.

Execution

  1. Loop a band over the bar, put one bent knee in the loop and take a medium to wide grip.
  2. Exhale and pull up until your chin clears the bar.
  3. Inhale and lower under control.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping into the band and bouncing — the band pulls hardest at the bottom, so lower slowly.
  • Staying on the same band forever — once you get 10–12 with it, switch to a thinner one.
  • Kicking your knees and swinging — keep your body nearly vertical.
  • Stopping short of the bar — use the full range, or your own pull-ups won't come.
