Legs

Good Morning

The good morning is a hinge with the bar on your back: hamstrings, glutes and spinal erectors.

Setup

Put the bar on your traps like for a squat. Feet hip-width, knees slightly bent. Shoulder blades back, abs braced.

Execution

  1. Rack the bar across your upper back like a squat, feet shoulder-width, knees slightly bent, shoulder blades pinched.
  2. Inhale, push your hips back and bend forward to near parallel with the floor, back flat with its natural arch.
  3. Exhale and extend through your glutes and hamstrings. Keep the weight modest here — this one is about form, not records.

Common mistakes

  • Back rounding — go only as low as you can keep it flat; often that's above parallel.
  • Squatting instead of hinging — push your hips back, knees barely change angle.
  • Using squat weights — good mornings take a lot less.
  • Jerking up — come up smoothly, driving your hips forward.

Not sure about your form? Send me a video of a set — I'll take a look and tell you what to fix first.
