Barbell Curl vs Dumbbell Curl
Both bend the elbows against a load. A barbell ties your hands together and lets you lift more; dumbbells give each arm its own path and let you turn your wrist.
| Barbell Curl | Dumbbell Curl | |
|---|---|---|
| Muscles | biceps, brachialis | biceps, brachialis |
| Equipment | Barbell | Dumbbells |
| Entry bar | 1/3 fine from your first workout | 1/3 fine from your first workout |
| Pick it when | You want heavier, simpler progression and your wrists are fine. | A straight bar bothers your wrists or elbows, or one arm lags. |
The main difference
A barbell is easier to progress in weight and both arms work at once — but a straight bar locks your wrists in one position, and some people get wrist or elbow pain (an EZ bar helps). With dumbbells you can turn your palm up as you lift — that loads the biceps more — and alternate arms, resting one. A weaker arm can't hide behind the stronger one.
Can you do both
Yes: the barbell first for arms, heavier, dumbbells second, alternating or on an incline bench. Biceps need little direct volume — back pulls already load them.
In which programs
Log both in the diary — your estimated max will show which one is growing faster for you.
