Preacher Curl vs Concentration Curl
Both are strict curls: your body can't help, so the biceps works alone. The difference is where the movement gets hardest.
| Preacher Curl | Concentration Curl | |
|---|---|---|
| Muscles | biceps, brachialis | biceps |
| Equipment | EZ bar | Dumbbells |
| Entry bar | 1/3 fine from your first workout | 1/3 fine from your first workout |
| Pick it when | You want heavy strict isolation with the focus on the stretch. | You want to nail the peak contraction and even out your arms one at a time. |
The main difference
On a preacher bench your upper arm lies on an angled pad in front of you, and the hardest point is at the bottom, when the arm is nearly straight and the biceps is stretched. It's usually done with an EZ bar, and the weight is decent. Don't drop the weight at the bottom or snap the arm straight — that's exactly where the elbow has it hardest.
In a concentration curl you sit, brace your elbow against your inner thigh and curl a dumbbell with one arm. It's hardest at the top, where the biceps fully contracts. The weight is small, but it's easy to control every rep and even out a weaker arm.
Can you do both
Yes: preachers earlier for 8–12, concentration curls at the end of arm day for 10–15 per arm. Together they cover both the stretched position and the squeeze.
