Barbell Shrug vs Dumbbell Shrug
In both you lift your shoulders toward your ears and train the upper traps. The bar hangs in front of your thighs; the dumbbells hang at your sides.

| Pick it when | You want maximum weight and easy progression by plates. | You want a natural line of movement and each side working on its own. |
The main difference
With a barbell you can go very heavy, and progress is easy — by plates. The downside: the bar rubs your thighs and pulls your shoulders slightly forward, and your grip gives out fast — use straps on heavy sets.
Dumbbells hang at your sides, your shoulders rise along their natural line, and the range is usually a little bigger. Each side works on its own. The ceiling comes sooner: heavy dumbbells are hard to hold and pick up off the rack. In both, lift your shoulders straight up and don't roll them — rolling adds nothing.
Can you do both
Yes, but one is usually enough: the traps also work in deadlifts and rows. You can alternate them by week, or go heavy with the bar and do dumbbells for 12–15 on another day.
